Grade 8 & 9 Promotional Requirements

To be promoted from Grade 8 or 9, a learner must achieve the following:

  • English Home Language: Minimum of 50%

  • Afrikaans First Additional Language: Minimum of 40%

  • Mathematics: Minimum of 40%

  • Any Three Other Subjects: Minimum of 40%

  • Any Two Remaining Subjects: Minimum of 30%

Grade 10–12 Promotion Requirements

To be promoted in the FET phase (Grade 10–12), learners must meet the following:

  • 40% or more in three subjects, including English Home Language

  • 30% or more in three additional subjects

To qualify for the National Senior Certificate (NSC), learners must study seven nationally approved subjects, made up as follows:
